I wouldn't play a movie at my wedding. "Annie Hall" is a strange love story in that it really isn't a love story; its a snapshot of a relationship between a man and a woman. Watching Keaton and Allen's romance go from great to disastrous is an original and entertaining ride. Allen breaks the traditional mold of storytelling by actually acknowledging the audience and giving an omniscient narrative from time to time. The characters, settings, and unleashed nature from Keaton's Hall can only be from the mind of Woody Allen. His love for New York is ever present throughout the film. He makes the city not just the setting but a supplement to the characters' personalities and behaviors. Annie Hall is the girl that many men dream of: mysterious, intelligent, original, funny, sarcastic, free-spirited. Annie also represents the girl that many men fear as well. Allen's experiences with her throughout the movie not only show the change in their relationship, but the change in his expectations of what "love" should be. The question, "Do people change for another?" is answered by another question, "Why do people expect change while in a relationship?" The "truthiness" of Annie Hall is that we all will have relationships and we need to endure through them, for better or for worst. Its just inevitable.

Movie Challenge: Day 22- Movie that You Watch When You’re Sad
August Rush
The fairytale story of "August Rush" is pretty straightforward. Through music, an orphaned boy is able to reunite with his mother and father who throughout the film are out to find the ones they love; a mother to her child and a man to a woman. Even though there are scenes that bring August down, mainly by Robin Williams' character, hope and love is ever present in Freddie Highmore's demeanor. The fantastic original score is a character on its own. The theme that August develops and perfects throughout the story is a reflection of his character's emotion in scenes. Listening to the soundtrack alone elicits feelings of happiness, pain, and sadness; sometimes at the same time. Like all fairytales, this one has a heart-filled ending that (yes it still does for me) can bring a tear to one's eyes.

Movie Challenge: Day 21- Movie that You Watch When You’re Happy
Lilo & Stitch

This is my favorite animated (non-Pixar) Disney film. The perfect mix of sci-fi, humor (although kiddie), and heart makes this a smart and original movie. Stitch's tribulation throughout the film of being hunted down just for the simple fact that nobody wanted him is a reflection of how we, humans feel from time to time. The story of learning one's place in the world (in this case the universe) is presented with the revelation that family is home. Even through tragedy and indifference some form of a family exists, either in blood and/or friends. With the wonderful artwork all done through water-color and the interesting yet beautiful Hawaiian soundtrack (with a mix of The King in there), "Lilo & Stitch" broke from the classical Disney-produced musicals AND it succeeded. Spawning multiple sequels and a very well produced television show continuing the story of Stitch's 'ohana, it was no wonder that Disney has accepted this film as one of the classics.

Movie Challenge: Day 20- Movie that You Watch When You’re Angry
Serial Mom

John Water's dark comedy about a stay-at-home mom going a bit on the psycho side represents that darkness we can not enter. This is the perfect movie release when you're angry. Kathleen Turner's semi-innocent reasoning to killing is almost reasonable, yet they are extreme. The right twist of humor and "oh jeez" moments is perfect throughout the film. Listening to 'Tomorrow' from "Annie" will never be the same after watching this. For all the Marylanders out there, this is a must see because of the setting and that she could've been your neighbor!

Movie Challenge: Day 19- Movie from Your Favorite Director
The Royal Tenenbaums (Wes Anderson)

Quirky characters. Extreme closeups. Wacky stories. Simple acoustic music. Fast dialogue with extremely long shots. If you encounter all these elements in a film you are most likely watching a Wes Anderson film. The core cast list for Anderson is a troupe of respected and emotional actors that has grown to an A-list group including Bill Murray, Anjelica Huston, and Luke and Owen Wilson. From character design to sets, Wes' pre-production artwork is as descriptive as his films. "The Royal Tenenbaums" is perhaps the best film that exemplifies all of these elements. The story of redemption, understanding, and coping always moves me. Even though I know what happens in this film, I feel that every time I watch it, my emotions are deeply affected by the outcome. Next to "Rushmore," this movie is my favorite Wes Anderson film and second on my list of most favorite films.

Movie Challenge: Day 18- Your Favorite Indie Film
Following

Nolan's first attempt to confuse an audience by showing an event then jumping back to an earlier event in a story then back and forth and back and forth was perfected in "Following." Mostly known for (before his Batman films) "Memento," "Following" reflected many of the same style elements that made Nolan a household name in Hollywood. From the very first scene, you question EVERYTHING. It takes the first half of the film for your brain to put together the puzzle. Even after the film ends, you'll want to re-watch it to see vital plot twists in scenes that did not seem very important the first time through. The superb acting from virtually an unknown cast makes this film seem so real that the uneasiness caused will want you to watch your back while on the street or move your most personal belongings in your house. Despite the short length and the very minimal soundtrack, the plot and intimate camera work provide a very entertaining, yet creepy film-watching experience.

Movie Challenge: Day 17- Movie that You See Often on TV
Die Hard 2- Die Harder
The first was such an amazing action movie that the writers had to think of new ways to put McClane in pain. Enter "Die Hard 2." This was an over the top "balls-to-the-walls" popcorn flick that had twists and turns and great one liners. Unfortunately, the producers made a "Formated for Television" version so all the swearing and the extreme violence were brought down to a PG-13 level. Without seeing the original version first, the edited version of the film would make you hate the franchise. But after watching and KNOWING the lines to the original, the formated version is HILARIOUS! Great lines such as "Yippe Kiyay MISTER FALCO" and "OHHHHHHH...... SHOOOOOOOOOT" are just "HU????" I see this movie on at least once a month on either WGN or some random local channel on a Sunday afternoon. Its packed with commercials and its perfect to have in the background while doing laundry or other chores around the house.

Movie Challenge: Day 16- Movie that You Used to Love but Now Hate
Star Wars- Episode I: The Phantom Menace

This was one of the biggest hypes in movie history... and for kids it rocked! But as we all grow older, we seem to see past our childish fantasies and dreams and tend to be more critical. When it came to the "Phantom Menace," these truths were brought to life in the most disturbing way: Jar Jar Binks, baby Anakin, and a naked C-3PO? WTF! Besides the only two things that kicked ass in the film (Liam Neeson and Darth Maul), the rest of the movie was an unnecessary, over-drawn prequel that was better left to the imagination. We all knew who the F Anakin was, we all knew Obi-Wan could kick Sith ass, we AAAALLL KNEW SIDIOUS WAS PALPATINE!!!! Thanks George, you still hold the saber that killed our childhood love of Star Wars and our intelligence. Only the original films can be respected and remembered for what they really were: perfect.
AND THE FORCE IS JUST THE FORCE..... PERIOD!!!!!!!

Movie Challenge: Day 15- Movie that Describes You
The Breakfast Club

Next to "Ferris Beuller," this is my favorite Hughes flick. Most if not ALL teenagers who grew up in some pop-cultured environment has seen this movie or knows of its importance in adolescent tolerance. Each character represents an aspect of school life that everyone can relate to (unless you were home-schooled). I personally find myself in each character, yes, even the glamor-princess. The final act of the film is the epitome of the idea: "no matter how different people are, we are all the same." While growing up and going through different phases of my teenage angst, I'd look to this movie to admire the character I could relate to the most at that time. I wouldn't say that Bender's abusive household was something I could relate to, but the concept of being rebellious crosses every teen's mind and actions once in awhile. With a great soundtrack that included the classic hit "Don't You (Forget About Me)," and the terrific dialog within such an intimate setting, the five students at Shermer High School came to life and will forever be remembered in movie history as "The Breakfast Club."
Btw.... did you know that Hughe's shot the movie (which he wrote the screenplay in two days) entirely in sequence?? Damn!

Movie Challenge: Day 14- Movie that No One Would Expect You to Love
27 Dresses

CHICK FLIIIIIIICK!!!! I can not get enough of this movie. Since "Knocked Up" (I do not watch "Grey's Anatomy"), Katherine Heigl is such a fun actress to watch. Her comedic timing, expressions, and choice in roles remind me of classic actresses like Audrey Hepburn and Bette Davis. Of course her film career is just blooming, I expect many great roles (besides the "Killers") from her. This romcom follows the generic hollywood love story but it still keeps the context original. My man-crush, James Marsden plays the love interest to Heigl. With witty dialogue, fun scenes (Bennie and the Jets sing-along in a bar??), and the "AWWW" factor towards the final act of the film, "27 Dresses" could be considered my guilty pleasure, but it doesn't beat out "Kissing a Fool" for that title respectfully.... but I do still love this film.

Movie Challenge: Day 13- Movie that is a Guilty Pleasure
Kissing a Fool

During the days of "Friends," David Schwimmer was pretty much typecast as Ross. "Kissing a Fool" showed the bad side of Ross. Jason Lee's artsy, writer character falls for his book editor, who happens to be his best friend (Bad-boy and cheating sports anchor, "Ross")'s girlfriend. The story, being told by the ever so entertaining Bonnie Hunt, is your run of the mill ménage à trois romcom. The film actually has fantastic writing, even though the characters are just copies from other related films. Luckily, the acting brings more life to the film.

Movie Challenge: Day 12(b)- Movie From the Actress You Hate
Bride Wars (Kate Hudson)

Goldie, why did you have her? "Almost Famous" was Kate's only good film. Since then, Kate Hudson has played the SAME character in EVERY film: the snobby bitch who always learns her lesson at the end. Her rested expression is a permanent scowl and her negative attitude feels that its pulled from her personal life. "Bride Wars" was the epitome of her acting career. Anne Hathaway saved this entertaining revenge semi-chix-before-.....rom- com. I absolutely can NOT stand her look, her films, and her sickening association with Matthew McConaughey.

Movie Challenge: Day 12(a)- Movie From the Actor You Hate
::She's The Man:: (Channing Tatum)With good looks comes horrible acting. Tatum's dry, unemotional reactions, and horrific romantic presence on screen made this movie very uncomfortable to watch. "She's the Man" is a modern day retelling of Shakespeare's "Twelfth Night." Amanda Bynes' portrayal of a girl willing to "man-up" by impersonating her twin brother to play soccer at a prestigious school is hilarious. The entire movie was fun and a dumb escape for a lazy Sunday. Until Channing Tatum started to speak. Oh my freaking GAWD! His acting technique is worst than a grade-schooler's Christmas pageant shepherd stand-in. Why oh why is he in "G.I. Joe?"
GOOOO JOE? Go away, TATUM!
Movie Challenge: Day 11(b)- Your Favorite Actress
Elizabeth (Cate Blanchett)
Cate Blanchette won the only Oscar for this film, rightfully for best actress by channeling the Virgin Queen, Elizabeth Tudor. The film depicts the rise of Queen Elizabeth I and her struggle while trying to lead an empire after years of death and religious schism. Corrupt advisors and assassination rumors force the Queen to learn her role quickly. Cate's assertive nature and chilling transformation from a frail girl to a unquestioning Queen was the most memorable performance of her career. Even though this film lost best picture to "Shakespeare in Love" (over-rated, thank you Academy!), the costumes, sets, and ridiculously great acting by Geoffrey Rush and Joseph Fiennes (haha two movies he was in that were nominated for best picture that year) can not be ignored. Other films that spiraled Blanchett's career of excellence include "The Curious Case of Benjamin Button," "The Life Aquatic," and of course "The Lord of the Rings" trilogy.

Movie Challenge: Day 11(a)- Your Favorite Actor
Gangs of New York (Daniel Day-Lewis)
There are specific crimes in this world that are unforgivable. The American Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences has been proven guilty of such crimes, mainly when it comes to "Gangs of New York." A whopping TEN Oscar nominations including best director AND best actor with NO wins??? Beaten by "Chicago" and Adrien Brody respectfully, Scorsese's period masterpiece gave a first hand look at how many of the immigrants to the United States lived and were treated. Day-Lewis' "The Butcher" was a maniacal, racist patriot who made you feel guilty to cheer for him. The line between good and evil was clearly drawn in the first shot of the film but thanks to Danny's incredible performance, that separation became an erased line of chalk where even the protagonist, Leonardo DiCaprio (whose performance was also impressive and "kick-ass") seemed to forget his overall goal in the story. The eclipse of thespian genius that was Daniel Day-Lewis was ignored by the blind judgement of the Academy. His other films include "My Left Foot" (his first Oscar winning performance), The Last of the Mohicans, and of course, "There Will Be Blood." His ability to transform his entire being for a role is remarkable. It is said that weeks after shooting "Gangs of New York," Day-Lewis could not stop talking like Bill "The Butcher"... creepy and WOW!

Movie Challenge: Day 10- Movie that Makes You Fall Asleep
it's Complicated

It was complicated... I was confused why Nancy Meyers, such a great director and writer, chose to do such a sleeper... literally, a sleeper! Maybe I was VERY tired when I watched it but oh man, this movie was slower than a sleeping turtle. With such a great cast and crew, how could it have gone wrong? Its because there was nothing in this film that i could relate to. I was officially out of the demographic for this film! Congratulations Hollywood, you figured out how to keep teenagers out of the theaters so that the baby boomers can have a night out without text messages and popcorn throwing. I'm sure it was a decent film... perhaps my subconscious enjoyed it while my eyes took a nap.

Movie Challenge: Day 9- Movie that You Can Dance To
It Might Get Loud

I do not dance to movies. But if I were to, or just tapping my foot to a beat, it would be to this documentary. Taking three excellent guitarists from different rock aspects and sitting them together was probably the funnest thing to record. Each story tells of hardship and beginnings that have never been told. Incite into what made U2, Led Zeppelin, and the White Stripes (and The Raconteurs) are described first hand by a founding member of their respected group. Its a simple film that ends with a clash of guitar jams. We all know the songs, this movie gives meaning to them.

Movie Challenge: Day 8- A Movie that You Know by Heart
Young Frankenstein

My personal favorite comedy. Mel Brooks, Gene Wilder, Peter Boyle, Marty Feldman (and his lazy eye), Cloris Leachman!!!! and Madeline Kahn are the "perfect storm." What sets this film apart from other Brooks' work is the originality and uniqueness of the production put forth on the screen. By combining a classic tale and turning it upside-down with crazy characters and hilarious comic bits thrown in, Mel Brooks created a classic film that movie-junkies like me eat up. Frau Blücher (neeehhhhh), "PUT ON THE RITZ", Gene Hackman's blindman, Abby Normal... just classic!!!! Before comedies became crude-fest, Apatow-norms (which I still love of course), writers believed in subtleness and some level of intellect to create masterpieces such as this film.

Movie Challenge: Day 7- Movie that Reminds You of a Certain Event
Waitress
Time for one of my sappy film choices. I had a difficult time recalling a film that reminds me of a certain event. Was I going to pick something personal or a well known event (e.g. the movie "World Trade Center")? My first choice was "The Dark Knight" because of Heath Ledger but EVERYONE knows about the tragedy surrounding that film.
Instead, I chose the little indie flick, "Waitress". For a romantic drama, "Waitress' is actually...good. Director/writer/co-star Adrienne Shelly illustrates a colorful caricature of a small town diner and the patrons and workers that frequent there, all played by an amazing cast including Jeremy Sisto, Andy Griffith, and Nathan Fillion. The story revolves around Keri Russell, a waitress and pie-maker who's affair with Fillion jeopardizes her abusive marriage. The clever dialogue and wonderful production of the inner monologues (mainly her making up pie recipes) from Russell keeps you cheering for her character throughout. Without spoiling the film any further, i recommend you see it. I'll explain now what event it reminds me of.
In 2006, a year before "Waitress" was finished production and released at Sundance, Adrienne Shelly was brutally murdered. Leaving behind a two year old daughter and a husband, Shelly's legacy was short-lived but remembered dearly by the independent film community. While watching Shelly act and seeing the final product of her last work, one is haunted by the sadness that we all wish to leave behind while watching movies. Fortunately, the film is a story of redemption and hope; things we all yearn for in these trying times.

Movie Challenge: Day 6- Movie that Reminds You of Somewhere
Rushmore

This was tough. My answer is really any Wes Anderson film. Its probably because of the style of his films. He always brings his characters close to the viewer. Even before they are presented fully in a film, you immediately know them because they are reflections of everyone's personality. Whether it be an obvious trait that is visible to the public or a hidden shame or secret that defines who we are. "Rushmore" brings these archetypes to life. The setting and stories are not what remind me of a place, its the characters. Throughout life, you meet all sorts of people and each one can be seen in an Anderson film. This is the reason why Wes Anderson films (I guess "Rushmore" mainly) reminds me of my days at CUA and UMBC.

Movie Challenge: Day 5- Movie that Reminds You of Someone
Back to the Future
(not the trilogy, just the first one)

Perhaps one of the best movies to come out of the 80s, "Back to the Future" is a film that brings out the kid inside. The wacky sci-fi, the memorable characters, and of course the theme song are classic! With that being said, there is no question that a late friend and co-worker of mine absolutely adored this movie. He considered "Back to the Future" to be the best movie of all time. Was it because of the DeLorean? Or the clever time travel paradoxes presented to Marty? Or even just Biff?? Who knows and who cares... all those elements bring together the icon of which geekdom-pop culture thanks. Robert Zemeckis' (and yes, even Steven Spielberg) had an outrageous idea (at one time they wanted to use a refrigerator as the time machine) and went past the typical Hollywood standards of film-making. Without the green light for Zumeckis to make the film, who knows if movies such as "Who Framed Rodger Rabbit" or even "Forrest Gump" would've been made.
Heavy, Doc... Heavy.

Movie Challenge: Day 4- Movie that Makes You Sad
Children of Men

Do NOT confuse this movie with a movie that I do not like. It is most definitely in my top ten films. The struggle of the human race in this film pulls your emotions to the brink of fear. "Could this really happen?" Perhaps, but even if it were a different global catastrophic event, would mankind act the same way? Throughout the entire movie you are thrown in the middle of a "war" for survival and hope. The great cinematography and art direction all help to bring you closer to the story and make you experience exactly what Owen's character feels: desperation.

Movie Challenge: Day 3- Movie that Makes You Happy
I Love You, Man
Next to "Forgetting Sarah Marshall", this is the best Apatow produced film. The reason why this beats out the other is that its a bro-mance film, not a love story. Of course there are other great buddy comedies but this one is perhaps one of the most original and well written ones out there.
Slappa-dee Base'a Man!

Movie Challenge: Day 2- Your Least Favorite Movie
Crash
I can understand racism. I can understand tolerance. I can understand coincidence. But the idea of throwing them all together for the sake of a plot and getting an amazing cast of actors together doesn't make it a movie good. The snapshots of society in this film are so blatantly white and black that the movie is hypocritical of itself! Yea, I get what they were doing... but if you want to see a movie about race and tolerance and actually feel enlightened at the end, watch "Do the Right Thing".
Movie Challenge: Day 1- Your Favorite Movie
The Empire Strikes Back
The older I got, the better the movie was. This movie has everything: Action, sci-fi, romance, danger, double-cross, friendship, life lessons, plot twists, comedy, and yes...even a space worm.

Red Riding Hood
The classic tale of Little Red Riding Hood, as made famous in print by the 19th century brothers Grimm, is reintroduced to the 21st century with a little poetic licensing. The basic story that is told to nearly every child to warn them about 'stranger-danger' and wolves in sheep's clothing is pretty much intact. The deviations from the tale include a slew of (dare I say it?), Twilight inspired motifs. *NOTE* I am NOT saying that Twilight was the first movie/story to have your ménage à trois and forbidden love elements. I'm just stating that today's heart-throb cinema is now held to a cookie cutter standard for fantasy teen adolescent romance. With that being said, yes... this film does has the run-of-the-mill teen romance. Fortunately, the movie doesn't make you sick of that romance shared by the main characters, Val (red riding hood played adoringly by Amanda Seyfried) and her childhood love, Peter (the wanna-be rugged Shiloh Fernandez). Throw in a few jealous/filler characters, err.... a werewolf, and the stereotypical good-willed yet evil baddie, Gary Oldman (loooove himmmm)... and you'll have the basic gist of the movie. Director Catherine Hardwicke (better known for, you guessed it, Twilight) overly uses the cliché scenes containing: "silence...breathing... then SUDDEN GASP." Personally it got old after the second time. Lighting, camera angles, and even actor blocking seemed to be completely copied from her other film! Apart from the similarities to that movie, Red Riding Hood can actually hold its own. The entire film was just a murder mystery wrapped with a mix of Beowulf and Sleepy Hallow. The set design had a dreary, Germanic medieval atmosphere while the acting, even though it didn't have any particular standouts, was acceptable with the sub-par script. The special effects were decent but really, not much was needed nor really required as much as Oscar-winning monster-flick, Wolfman. This movie screams NETFLIX instant stream but if you are looking for a simple popcorn flick, then Red Riding Hood is waiting at grandmother's house for you.
::Bottom Line::
-Twilight-esque cinematography/romance parallels... could be good or bad, depending if you're 16 or 61
-Quasi predictable plot that actually made the movie fun and kept myself guessing the answer to the mystery
-Gary Oldman is old :( but can still kick ass with accents
::Verdict::
The Green Hornet

This dumbed-downed drudging film is finally on the silver screen. Was it worth the wait? Perhaps if you are itching to see the 'Superbad' screenwriters' attempt to make a full on action blockbuster (wait wasn't that why 'Pineapple Express' was made?). Apart from the regular shtick that Seth Rogen contributes to the script, the whole movie was pretty bland. Sure the action scenes introduced Jay Chou to the rest of the world as, dare I say it, the next Bruce Lee, but the story buildup and delivery felt lacking. The simplistic plot is of course expected but fortunately the writers paid homage to the original series and to a few martial arts pop culture references (Street Fighter fans huzzah!). Some elements of the film felt forced and completely studio pushed (perhaps for run-time extensions?). I understand studio pressure but when a screenplay is on the burners for more than a decade, a few extra months couldn't hurt the production of said screenplay. I can not end this review without mentioning Christoph Waltz. Need I say more? The man can take a role written for a marsupial with boxing gloves and make it feel welcoming. I saw the film in 3-D.....? No choice since all the times I wanted to see it weren't in 2-D. The post three dimensional transition wasn't as bad as other films (The Last Airbender) and it didn't impair the enjoyment of the action scenes.
::Bottom Line::
-Good date movie
-Don't expect 'The Dark Knight' for superhero nerds
-The Lone Ranger meets Shanghai Noon... In LA.... With lots of guns... Minus Jackie Chan
::Verdict::
